The results of this initiative will be a variety of local products, that will be highly competitive due to the modest prices thus making them affordable for a large ptercentage of the population. Still in the early phase with further developments on the concept urgently needed, this idea is the simple and practical solution to various issues. It proves as a win-win situation for all ie social community, companies, environment.
So, what is Terrace Farming/Rooftop Gardening?
Rooftop gardens are man-made green spaces on the topmost levels of industrial, commercial, and residential structures. They may be designed to grow fruits and vegetables, provide play space, give shade and shelter, or simply be there as a living, green area.
Due to growth in population, it is expected that there will be rapid urbanization from 31% to 41% by 2025 to support the growing population. This will lead to a reduction in arable land, increase in food prices and rising transportation cost due to larger distances.
The residents of Block 30, Siddha Garden, Rajarhat fashioned their space to more productive one. They transformed their 5,000 sq.ft roof space into a fertile farmland with the help of 5 farming experts.
